Comprehensive care for the most common injuries in kids and adults
For more than 50 years, Appalachian Orthopaedics has provided top quality orthopaedic care in northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia in Bristol and Johnson City. Our orthopaedic surgeons are involved in academic and research work in addition to seeing patients.
Although we cover a wide range of subspecialties, the foundation of our practice is general orthopaedics. This includes common orthopaedic injuries like ankle sprains, pulled muscles, and broken bones. We see kids with injuries as well as adults.
Sprains & Strains
Sprains and strains happen all the time, especially if you are active in sports or fitness activities, or if your work is physical. There may be a “pop” when the injury happens, followed by sudden pain or stiffness when you move. Muscle spasms or cramping can also set in pretty quickly as your body tries to respond.
The most common areas affected are the ankle, knee, shoulder, legs, and back. Hot and cold therapy with heating pads and ice packs can reduce swelling and stiffness following an injury. You should rest until the pain goes away – probably a day or two.
If the injury does not heal, you may need medical attention. Sometimes an injection of medication is all you need. More serious injuries may require surgery to repair torn muscles or tendons.
Fractures (broken bones) almost always need medical attention. We’ll take an X-ray to look at the fracture closely. Then we can think about the best way to get you back to normal. You might need a simple splint or brace, while others may need a full cast and crutches.
No matter what you need, we’ve got you covered. While you’re recovering, we’ll periodically check in to make sure things are healing properly. Learn more about fracture care in our online library.
Doctors at Appalachian Orthopaedics have training in general orthopaedics, and several have additional training in subspecialties of orthopaedic medicine, including:
