Appalachian Rehab & Sports Medicine (ARSM) is a division of Appalachian Orthopaedic Association specializing in out-patient orthopaedic physical therapy. Our philosophy is to treat each person as an individual and not as a diagnosis. Restoring function and enhancing quality of life are the outcomes of successful therapy which are a result of the patient working through a guided program provided by the physical therapist. We believe that individuals are responsible for their own health. Therefore, great care is taken to personalize treatment and to educate clients about care of their current physical problems as well as about prevention of future difficulties. We take pride in assisting our patients in their return to the highest level of activity desired, over the shortest possible time, in the safest possible manner, using the most up-to-date methods. Physical Therapy services require a physician referral. We can file most insurances for you. Our office staff will be glad to verify covered services prior to your first visit. Our Services Appalachian Rehab & Sports Medicine provides a full and comprehensive set of out-patient orthopaedic services, including: • Treatment of sprains, strains and other injuries and musculoskeletal problems • Treatment of sports injuries • Joint Replacement Rehabilitation • Post-operative orthopaedic care • Orthotic assessment and fabrication • Vestibular and balance rehabilitation • Functional Capacity Evaluation • Work rehabilitation
Spine Therapy Often, spine rehabilitation requires a multi-disciplinary approach. There is no single rehabilitative process that provides successful functional restoration for all back problems. In addition to traditional spine therapy ARSM offers McKenzie therapy which focuses on the mechanical diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders. We also offer Med X lumbar testing and strengthening. MedX Lumbar Extensor treatment involves the use of a patented system designed to isolate and strengthen the muscles of the spine. Patients are tested statically measuring muscle strength at various points in their lumbar range of motion. Patients are trained dynamically. In Test mode results are plotted on a strength curve. Documentation of both static and dynamic muscle function yields valuable information. Strength curves can be used for normative comparisons, exercise prescription, confirmation of abnormalities and documentation of progress. Work Rehabilitation The ARSM work rehabilitation program provides rehabilitation of an injury, total body conditioning, body mechanics instruction, and return to work related activities. Just as important, the work rehabilitation program offers a structured environment that emphasizes discipline, accountability, and self responsibility required to return to the work environment. Orthotics We provide two types of custom orthotics, AcuStep and Fast Tech. AcuStep Pressure Relieving Orthotics reduces the amount of pressure on your feet when you walk, run, or jump. Sensors are inserted into your shoes to evaluate the areas of foot pressure then the orthotic is designed to relieve and redistribute painful pressures across your entire foot. Fast Tech custom orthotics are a molded weight bearing orthotic. These orthotics are custom made in our office and usually only require one to two visits. These orthotics are more firm and typically are prescribed for someone who has a very flat foot or needs specific arch support. Your physician or physical therapist can help determine which type of orthotic may work better for you. Sports Medicine In addition to working with injured athletes in the clinic, ARSM works with the athletic trainer, physician, parents, and coaches to coordinate care. ARSM also provides game coverage and once a week evaluations for high school and college level sport programs. Joint Replacement Therapy We provide individualized rehabilitation programs to assist patients after total knee, hip or shoulder replacement surgery. We guide you through the recovery process to help you return to the most active lifestyle possible, utilizing the most current therapeutic protocols. Additionally we have a therapist who works for ARSM and has contracts with several home health agencies to provide home care. This affords us the ability to maintain continuity of care by helping the patient transition from home health care to outpatient care. Functional Capacity Evaluation(FCE), Job Site Analysis, Post Offer Job Testing ARSM has a therapist certified to perform Functional Capacity Evaluations, Ergonomic job analyses, and post offer employment screens. These programs are used to assess an individuals physical capabilities relative to return to work. FCE Testing can be job specific, or may be used to certifyones ability or inability to work. These tests are typically not covered by commercial insurances.
